Leaving her village to follow her dream of becoming an actress, Hiam Abbass also left behind her mother, grandmother and seven sisters. Thirty years later, her filmmaker daughter Lina returns with her to journey through the vanished places among the scattered memories of four generations of daring Palestinian women.
Lina Soualem is a French-Palestinian-Algerian filmmaker and actress based in Paris. Her debut documentary, “Their Algeria”, premiered at Visions du Réel 2020 and won multiple awards. She also acted in films by Hafsia Herzi and Hiam Abbass. In 2023, her second feature, “Bye Bye Tiberias”, premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was selected at TIFF, BFI, and more. The film won the Best Documentary Award at the BFI and was chosen to represent Palestine at the 2024 Oscars.
