Smallpox is the deadliest disease in human history killing almost 500 million people in the 20th century alone, and it is the only deadly virus eradicated by humans, which is regarded as one of the biggest achievements of our civilization. In the story of the eradication of smallpox, that united the entire world, the 1972 epidemic in Yugoslavia, the final outbreak of smallpox in Europe, is still remembered as one of its most horrifying and inspiring chapters.

 

Mladen Kovačević is a director and producer born in Serbia in 1978. He studied film directing in Belgrade, London, and Cape Town. In just a few years after graduation, he directed several documentaries, the most notable of which is his debut, Unplugged (2012), which screened at Visions du Réel in Switzerland and was awarded several prizes, including the award for best Serbian documentary film at the 2013 Beldocs.
